Hello, I’m
Dr. Heather Elford ND
Naturopathic Doctor, Doula, Wife and Dog Mom.
I wanted to be a Naturopathic Doctor for as long as I could remember…
It was always the answer I gave every time I was asked “what do you want to be when you grow up?”. I knew I wanted to help people and get to the root of their health concerns.
Growing up in a family with my Mother being a Chiropractor trained in TCM gave me a love for Traditional therapies, while marrying into a family of nurses gave me a passion for Integrative medicine. I see Naturopathic Doctors being the perfect bridge between these two worlds.
I knew for a long time I wanted to be a Naturopathic Doctor. My main hesitation to joining the profession was that I didn’t want to just treat the few people who could afford it. Not that people with money didn’t also need Naturopathic care, but that I knew there was an entire patient population who would benefit from our medicine but couldn’t afford it.
There were times that being a broke student, I couldn’t even afford the medicine I was learning, but it transformed my life and I knew that other people needed this medicine in the same way I did.
I struggled with this concept all throughout my medical training, looking for ways to allow patients who would otherwise be unable to afford my services, to access this powerful medicine that I had been learning. And then in learning about Affordable Healthcare models by trail-blazing members of our profession, it felt as though a lightbulb went off in my mind.
I knew this was why I became a Naturopathic doctor.
To improve access to Naturopathic medicine and better health for all people.
It feels like a risky move to offer Affordable options in a profession where we spend so much time with our patients and dive deeply into their case, but I believe in the capability and power of our medicine to transform lives, and I want that for all my patients regardless of their financial status.
So, what does that look like in my Practice?
It looks like:
– “Pay what you Can” appointment options for patients
– Community Acupuncture so multiple patients can access treatment together
– Workshops and learning opportunities for more people to access better health education
– Postpartum home visits to improve access to care for new moms and babies
– Virtual appointments throughout Ontario to further improve access to Naturopathic care
My goal is for all patients to access their best selves in the same way I experienced.
